Visual Poetry
Workshop with Eliza Holliday

April 14 - 19 2005
Amelia Island, FL

WordPainting is a technique of using calligraphic media and words to create graphic surfaces that are intensely personalized,
therapeutic and which challenge all calligraphic conventions.

This technique teaches the participants to trust the painter and poet inside them, and to take some time to write and paint in
an absolutely open-ended way.... moving beyond the limitations of words as they are traditionally used, and utilizing the graphic
surface as a painter might, instead of as a graphic designer.

That is why it is so essential for a workshop like this to be a retreat for the participant, a time to reflect and experiment without
the self consciousness of their roles in the familiar world.

Eliza Holliday will conduct this retreat at Amelia-by-the-Sea, condos directly on the Atlantic Ocean, quality rooms with full kitchens, balconies and
a swimming pool and the entire Amelia Island beach to walk.

You are invited to come to Florida to breathe, live, dream, sleep, and eat as a WordPainter for four days and five nights, twenty four hours a day,
in a small intimate group (retreat limited to four to seven participants).

Amelia Island is located on the eastern Florida coast, just south of the Georgia border. Cumberland Island National Seashore is visible across the
St. Mary’s River mouth. The climate of Amelia Island more resembles the southern Georgia savannah lands than tropical (southern) Florida.

We recommend that you consider extending your stay to include nearby Savannah, Jekyll Island, St. Augustine (the oldest U.S. city), Cumberland
Island, the clear water rivers and diving springs in Ocala National Forest, and of course, Orlando, city of many attractions.

Eliza has taught this unique workshop from coast to coast, allowing calligraphers to learn to work as expressive painters; with background, gesture,
letterform and word. She has devised a series of exercises to guide you to your own muse, both with creative writing and improvised painting.

Tuition is 250.00 with separate accommodation fees depending on number of participants and room preference (see below). That fee will include
room, brunch or lunch and two dinners for the five-day stay. Because of time constraints this spring, a deposit of 300.00 will be needed to hold
your spot. No refunds after March 15th. Balance due apon arrival.
There will be a fee of $20 for round-trip shuttle from Jacksonville International Airport.
Please return information below with deposit to Eliza Holliday 129 S.17th Street, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034 (904.277.4834 eliza@letterist.com)
