Minutes from Florida Guilds Statewide Meeting Lakewood Retreat March 12, 1999

Petrea Tomko welcomed and recognized all guild representatives--all being represented except the Jacksonville guild....

Linda Renc invited members to write articles, make reports of workshops attended, submit calligraphy pieces, cover art, photographs, etc. for the FLA journal. Jean Wood volunteered to write an article on the Deaver/Morentz retreat this year....

Graham Whitlow also promised to send an article he has previously published. Deadline is July 15, 1999....

Advertising in the FLA journal was also suggested and encouraged by contacting various art supply businesses, i.e., Sam Flax, Pearl, Michael’s....

Linda reported on the AlphaMark exhibit which will be featured at PenUltima in Canada. Everyone thought it a good idea to offer it to other prestigious museums as a traveling exhibit. The deadline has passed for entering a piece in AlphaMark, but the accepted pieces have not yet been announced....

A Fran Sloan Memoriam Fund is being established to promote educational projects. This fund will be publicized in the future in newsletters, at conferences, and workshops. Among various announcements were:

· The deadline for entries in The Graceful Envelope is March 19.
· Guild and individual ACA memberships were encouraged.
· Carol Layland has been successful in obtaining a tax ID number for the non-profit status of Florida Lettering Arts; when we have workshops, we can use this number.
· The Lakewood Retreat 2000 will be held in March. We have tentative commitments from Nancy Culmone and have invited John Stevens.
· Information about FLA web page has been sent to Alison Clement.
· E-mail addresses will be published in the next FLA journal.
· Bobbi Robertson reported about the courses that are available on the Internet through Cyberscribes. Coming up will be a course in Copperplate which will offer individual tutors if desired.

Guild Reports:

Scribes of Central Florida: Dawn Call gave the particulars on Calligrafun ‘99. It will be presented April 10 and 11 at the Maitland Art Center, Maitland, FL, from 9:00 to 4:30 p.m. each day. As usual, there will be exhibits, hands on demonstrating of calligraphy, paper arts, paper casting and molding, one-hour mini-classes, a raffle of high quality work, and door prizes, and many other associated art activities. Flyers/posters are available - call Nancy Hoffman 407-240-1799 or e-mail: nphoffman@aol.com and you will be sent more information.

Sarasota Guild: Dottie McMillan reported that this guild will be inactive for a while, but the interested members will participate in neighboring guilds and activities.

Linda Renc led a discussion about an all state travelling exhibit which would invite calligraphers from all guilds and at all levels. Hopefully, we can have this ready by Calligrafaire 2000. The next meeting will be in September, perhaps in conjunction with Judy Melvin’s workshop in Orlando.
